Advent is more than countdowns and decorations — it’s a season of anticipation, preparation, and joyful hope. The Church invites us to slow down and focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

Let’s start with a little warm-up:
What is Advent?
A. A Christian liturgical season preceding Christmas
B. A time of waiting and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth
C. A time of waiting and preparing for the Second Coming of our Messiah, Jesus Christ
D. All of the above
Answer: 🎉 All of the above
Advent is a season when we wait in joyful hope for the coming of the newborn King… God made manifest!
On the First Sunday of Advent, the Church shares the prophetic words of Jeremiah:
“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promises I made to the house of Israel and Judah.”
We lift our hearts with Psalm 25:
“To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.”
Yet… if we’re honest, December often feels like a sprint:
- Buy all the gifts!
- Find the latest decorations!
- Take the perfect photo!
- Write the perfect letter!
Advent gently asks:
How do we make room for the Nativity — for God’s own Son — in the middle of all our to-dos?
It’s simple, though not always easy. We prepare by seeking quiet communion with Christ, one day at a time.
The word Advent comes from the Latin advenire — “to come.”
Jesus is coming:
- Not only in the manger 2,000 years ago
- But in the Sacraments today
- And again at the end of time
Advent teaches our hearts to expect Him, watch for Him, and long for Him.
Moms, we know longing: preparing, waiting, loving before seeing. Advent mirrors that experience perfectly.
- Breathe.
- Light candles.
- Pray as a family.
- Resist the December rush.
- Make space for silence, story, and Scripture.
Remember: Small actions done with love leave lasting memories. Your wreath, Advent calendar, bedtime prayers — each is a tiny lantern guiding the way toward Christmas.
You don’t need to do it all. Choose a few traditions that bring peace, not pressure.
“Advent increases our hope, a hope which does not disappoint.”
— Pope St. John Paul II
Take a deep breath. Jesus is coming — and this year, let’s tell ourselves:
Look peaceful. Look joyful. Look expectant.
Happy New Year!

Yes and no—the Jesse Tree marks the days of Advent like a calendar, but instead of treats it uses Scripture and symbols to help families prepare their hearts for Christ.
The lesson that changed everything is this: Christmas doesn’t end on December 25—it begins. Embracing the Church’s rhythm and living the Twelve Days with faith-filled traditions keeps Christ at the center, bringing true joy and peace.
Christmas is not about rushing or consumerism, but about entering the Church’s rhythm—preparing in Advent, celebrating the 12 days of Christmas, and rejoicing at Epiphany. By embracing prayer, gratitude, and service, and making our homes places of faith, we keep Christ at the center and reclaim the season’s true joy.
